Tim is Professor of Retinal Research at King’s College London, the UK’s largest biomedical sciences university. His key research interest is the investigation of novel drugs and surgical devices for retinal disease, particularly age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic eye disease.
Clinical trials and grants
Tim is Chief Investigator on a number of national and international trials, with a research portfolio totalling approximately £6M.
Examples of trials that Tim leads include:
STAR: a 28-centre, randomised, double-masked, sham-controlled, device trial of the robotically controlled delivery of stereotactic radiotherapy for wet AMD, funded by the NIHR. Details available here.
TIGER: a pan-European, randomised, controlled, surgical trial of vitrectomy, tissue plasminogen activator and gas tamponade for submacular haemorrhage secondary to wet AMD, commissioned by Euretina and funded by Fight for Sight. Details available here.
‘Bionic eye’: Tim served as a Principal Investigator in a clinical trial of subretinal implants for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa. Details available at The BBC.

Tim has more than 100 PubMed publications, most as first or senior author. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Moorfields Manual of Ophthalmology.
