Professor Timothy Jackson is a Consultant Ophthalmic and Retinal Surgeon based in London.

He offers private consultations and surgery at The London Clinic in Harley Street, and the Guthrie Clinic at King’s College Hospital. His NHS practice is based at King’s College Hospital London.

Following a medical degree in New Zealand, Tim undertook his ophthalmology training in the UK at St Thomas’ and Moorfields Eye Hospitals. He was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at King’s College Hospital, London in 2006 and won a national award to assume the post of University Senior Lecturer at King’s College London in 2011. He was promoted to Professor in 2018.

Tim works as an NHS Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at King’s College Hospital, a large teaching hospital in South London. He undertakes cataract surgery and has a sub-specialty interest in macular and retinal disease and vitreoretinal surgery.

He is a Professor in Retinal Research at King’s College London, part of the King’s Health Partners, the UK’s largest Academic Health Science Centre.

 

Teaching

Tim leads medical student training in Ophthalmology for King’s College London Medical School – a Russell Group University and the largest Medical School in Europe.

He is highly involved in training and teaching the future generation of ophthalmic surgeons at all levels and has trained numerous vitreoretinal fellows.

He supervises PhD and MD students in retinal research and frequently serves as an external PhD examiner.

Current research interests

After undertaking a PhD in retinal research, Tim has retained an active international research profile.

Tim’s key area of research interest is the investigation of novel drugs and surgical devices for retinal disease, particularly age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease.

He is Chief or Principle investigator on a number of national and international trials and currently holds an active research budget of approximately £6M. He leads one of the UK’s largest NIHR/MRC-funded randomised controlled trials of a retinal device and heads Europe’s largest non-commercial vitreoretinal surgical trial.

Tim is Editor-in-Chief of the Moorfields Manual of Ophthalmology – one of the best-selling UK Ophthalmology textbooks, with strong international sales in three languages.

Tim has well over 100 peer-reviewed PubMed publications, mostly in high-ranking ophthalmology journals as first or senior author, as well as 12 book chapters and more than 10 Editorials or commissioned articles.
